Recommended writers, scholars and books?

Salamun ailikum!

I confess, with regret however, that it has only been a year that I have come into contact with Al-Quran and have realized the true beauty, pragmatism and attraction of Al-Islam. This on one hand has broadened my vision but on the other hand has made me ponder over the Lack of original and honest scholarship in Islam. Hence I request my learned friends and brothers to post a comprehensive list of writers and scholars, ancient and contemporary, muslim and non-muslim, whose works can increase my knowledge of Al-Islam. I would also request my friends to post the name of the books and works related to Quran and everything Islamic: History, Philosophy, Economics, Politics, Sociology Linguistics, Arabic, Pre-Quranic history of Arabs, and tafaseer of Quran, which offer a different point of view from religious orthodoxy and depend on empirical evidences, reason and rationality instead of hearsay.

As I said although contemporary scholars are a must read but I would also like to read the works of ancients and the non-muslims to get the bigger picture.

Now I know that it is a big ask and a tiresome task to compile such a conprehensive list, especially to filter through the works of so called scholars, sages, Imams, Muftis and Mullahs but I would really appreciate this effort. It will guide me and people like me who have just started their research and study on this topic and may also help those who have spent some time doing it.

Finally I know that it is not possible to compile the complete list in a day or two so perhaps my respected friends will keep contributing to this thread over a period of time.

I will be extremely grateful.

Plus I have already made a list of recommeded books to buy. These are all adds from a Dutch order site, but you can find all of these books at Amazon.com.

I will write or find little reviews on each book and many more will be added. My own library exceeds already beyond 600 books on Islam, so I will choose the best and most important ones.

Also I am planning to make a Quranic study kit, which will contain all online books, articles and every recommended hard-copy book about the Quran, Arabic and history that is needed, i believe, to create a good understanding of the Quranic Message.
