5:33 The just punishment for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and endeavor to commit bloody crimes on earth, is that they be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet severed on alternate sides, or be entirely banished from the land. Such is their disgrace in this world, and an awful suffering awaits them in the Hereafter. [Banishing from the land indicates exile or imprisonment for life]

What is the definition of "those who wage war on Allah and his messenger" and "commit bloody crimes on earth"?

It seems to me that these two phrases encompass a multitude of actions. Even rape is said to be punishable by death based on this verse.

Also, here is 47:4

47.4. Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah.s Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost.

Based on this, people conclude that prisoners of war can oly be set free or ransomed. But can't they be executed under 5:33?

The scholar Fathi Osman has made a very good explanation to these terms in this article:
