From the Grand Masjid - Mujtaba Jamali, Makkah

Post by Dr. Shabbir »

It is sad the great Imams are stuck in their focus on rituals and don't understand Islam brings succes in all stages of existence, including this life. Their ritualistic thinking is based on the neglectance of this life and thus misunderstand the fact that the development of the Nafs/Self and its moving on to the Higher Life of the Afterlife, is determined by the level of knowledge and character that is created in this life. They ignore the fact that rituals will only help create discipline, and so no blessings will be given for the act alone. The blessings come from the character-development that is formed through fasting. Prayer is a physical symbolic representation of the mental submission to Allah's Laws. As long as the Muslin Ummah neglect the Message of the Quran, all their prayers are useless. What does it represent then? As long as they don't submit mentally to the Laws of Allah, their physical submission has no meaning.

Shun Hypocrisy

Dr. OSAMA Khayyat, Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque in Makkah advised Muslims to always be fearful of Allah as the day is not far off when they will be standing before Him.

In his Friday sermon, Sheikh Khayyat called upon the pilgrims to thank Almighty Allah for enabling them to perform Haj. He said Allah ordered the pilgrims to remember Him and to supplicate and thank Him. After completing their rituals they should ask none but Allah for the bounties and good things of this life and in the Hereafter. By doing this they would acknowledge and express their deep gratitude to Allah for the blessings and bounties He has bestowed on them.

They should pray Allah to grant them good in this life and in the Hereafter and save them from the punishment of the Hellfire. Asking Allah to grant the good things of this life includes every worldly need like good health, a spacious house, a pious wife, wealth, beneficial knowledge and doing good deeds. As to the good things of the Hereafter, they include being able to meet with Allah, enter paradise and be secure from the Great Fear (Al-Faza' Al-Akbar), among others. To protect and save ourselves from the Hellfire, requires us to do good deeds and follow the right path. This includes keeping away from committing sins and avoiding doubtful matters (Al-Shubuhat) and from what Allah has forbidden. Sheikh Khayyat said the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to repeat this supplication a lot.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Abdul Bari Al-Thubaiti, Imam and Khateeb of the Prophet's Mosque in Madina said hastening to do good deeds in obedience of Allah is a characteristic of the believers, but dragging one's feet in obeying Allah is the characteristic of hypocrites.

The Imam quoted Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as saying that those who shy away from offering Isha (night) and Fajr (dawn) prayers in the mosque are akin to hypocrites.

In his Friday sermon, Sheikh Al-Thubaiti said once the Prophet (peace upon him) was asked who were among the best of people. He replied, "Those who recahed old age and did good deeds." He was then asked who were evil among the people. He replied, "Those who reached old age but did bad deeds."

Sheikh Al-Thubaiti said obeying Allah encompasses obedience by acts of worship including prayers (Salat) because the reward for offering Salat is great and they have a great effect. They are a cause for Allah's mercy on His servants. When Allah bestows His mercy on His servant, he is happy in this world and in the Hereafter.
