What is meant by ummi?

Salaam alaikum.

In my area(bihar,india),it is a well established fact that our prophet muhammad(s) was a ummi(means could not read or write).but some where one net i found that our prophet was not so,his point was that accrding to hadeeth the very firt verses of Quran is about reading n writing,then why the prophet was not able to read n write?

What is the real meaning of ummi and was our prophet able to read n write? Any answer 4rm Quran?

Ummi also means gentile or non-Jew. The exalted prophet had learned to read and write. When he advises men and women to attain knowledge, how could he himself remain unlettered?


The Qur'an states clearly:


29:48 (O Prophet) you were never able to read a book before this (Qur’an), nor could you write anything with your own hand. Or else, those who try to disprove the truth might have some reason to doubt it. [2:23. Biyameenik = With your right hand = With your own hand]

Once again a non-issue has engulfed the Muslims of India. Beard or no beard a peaceful society is more important than anything else. The so called Muslims should now take up the case of the length of the Kurta and the size of the Shalwar. Someone rightly pointed out that a Muslim will always wear his elder brother's Kurta and his younger brother's Shalwar to fulfill the needs of Islam...What a shame !!!
