Is there such thing as paying fidyah ( material compensation for not fasting) to those who are unable to fast due to old age, long sickness, doing hard labour or other reasons? What does the Quran says on this?

Wishing all members and those who are reading this forum "Ramadan Almubarrak" may we be in the best of health InshaAllah.

Salaam Aleikum and Ramadhan moebarak,

May we attain more discipline and gain more knowledge this period.

The Quran says:

2:184 ... For those who can go through Abstinence only with hardship, there is a way of redemption: the feeding of an indigent. Any additional charity will bring additional reward...

See my Blog post on the website:

It is a period of education, both for male and female, gaining knowledge of the world, science, history and of course the Quranic system. During this period people are asked to be more involved in how to create the Deen, how to uphold it, understand it. It is thus an extra collective effort to create a new level of knowledge, strength and understanding about the Deen for all people. This is all done in a period of discipline training and social enhancement, and thus creates an opening for people to focus more on the Quranic Message in the busy schedule of daily work and family life.

And thus again it shown how Islam is not a religion, but a collective system of Life, it is in fact, a challenge to religion and all systems created by man.

In the system of God there is no need for personal salvation, and so these injunctions are only demanded from the people who can participate. There can be many reasons why certain people cannot participate and to still make them feel part of the system’s goals and progress, God has given them alternative assignments.

2:185 ..as God desires for you ease, and He does not desire hardship for you. The people are reminded to undergo the training of discipline as it is clearly important for our character:

2:184 Just for a fixed number of days. But if any of you is sick or he is on a journey, he may make up the same number of days later .........However, going through the training program of Abstinence is better for you, if you only knew. 2:185 .. But if any of you is sick or on a journey, let him practice Abstinence for the same number of days later.

But for those who can’t, a very worldly option is given; see the lack of demand of rituals or pleas for mercy:

2:184 ... For those who can go through Abstinence only with hardship, there is a way of redemption: the feeding of an indigent. Any additional charity will bring additional reward...

And here again we are shown how the Quran is focused on the betterment of Mankind, a social goal, and not a personal salvation one. Thus, no one needs to feel guilty or left out. If a person cannot participate in the training, he can still be part of fighting hunger in the world, one of the main goals in the Quranic system, by feeding the poor. Thus the person is still directly involved in the Quranic system.

This can be for example people who are sick or who live in extreme conditions in the most North and South regions of the Earth. One important factor is also that the Quran never says that women cannot participate because of their monthly cycle. The Quran only forbids intercourse during menstruation. But a woman can feel not fit enough because of the cycle and thus can catch up these days another time.

Since I am looking after my bedridden mother in law who is 98 yrs old and is unable to fast, I would like to ask the following questions based on the Quran.

How do a person who cannot participate in the training (fast), feed the poor?

Must he feed one poor person daily (at the end of the day that he/she did not fast) or could he/she feed a number of poor people at the end of the fasting month based on the 30days that he/she did not fast?

How much does he/she need to pay (in $) to feed a person for a day?.

The Quran leaves this open to the person as every person has different circumstances.

So you can decide for her what is good or not. The Quran says to feed 1 person or family. It does not say for 30 days or 1 day.

It leaves this all up to you. So look around in your surroundings, there is always someone that needs help.
