Circumcision

Post by Riaz Ahmed »

Salaams everyone,

They always say, that "The best questions are the simplist ones". So please can someone enlighten me with the following enquiry....

Why is circumcision mandatory in Islam? Is it just a ritual or is there any indication in the Noble Quran about it?
Or is it simply that the custom came from hot countries  where Islam was spread originally? Please confirm.

Circumcision

Recorded history tells that male circumcision was practised even before the biblical period. Parents worried when babies fondled their private part. Circumcision was recommended as a way to prevent what people thought was a masterbatory tendency.

Masterbation has been regarded as a religious sin since biblical time. Genesis 17 describes a bargain between God and Abraham. "This is my covenant which ye shall keep. Every man child among you shall be circumcised. Uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people, he hath broken my covenant."

As Dr. Shabbir rightly explained elsewhere in the Forum, that God and Prophet; and Quran do not ask people to circumcise anyone.

But think about the anathema - a muslim without circumcision !

Modern Muslims defend circumcision by arguing that the custom prevented them from disease. Whether originally they were aware of it or not. But the ancient jews knew exactly what circumcision was. It was a loyalty oath.

Either way, shall we say for Muslim that circumcision is an Abrahimic tradtion ??

Aslam o Elikom,

I didn't get my son circumcised because the doctors told me he didn't need it.. and I don't think that can stop him from being a good muslim inshahAllah, because there is no link between the two things whatever they may say.

thank you

Salaam,

God also has made us in perfection:

13:8 God knows what any female bears, and what decrease or increase takes place in the womb. Everything has a due measure with Him.

15:29 And when I have perfected him in due proportion and breathed into him something of My Energy, bow before him.”

27:88 .... Such is the Design of God Who disposes off all things
in perfect order. Surely, He is fully Aware of what you do.

32:7 Who created everything in perfect balance. Thus He initiated the creation of man (kind) from hydrated inorganic matter.

64:3 He created the heavens and the earth in Truth and with a Sublime
Purpose. And He formed you and formed you so well with beautiful potentials. And unto Him is the Final Destination.

82:7 Who created you, then fashioned you, then proportioned you? (95:4)
82:8 Having shaped you and put you together well in accordance with His
Laws. (59:24)

Although He gave us the ability to improve on the Creation by using our given faculties, as long as circumcision is not proven to give a full improvement to life, it can not be accepted.

We must judge circumcision from health benefits, not from tradition. Same as, for example, eating with the right hand, in cultures where there is not a lot of soap, the left/wash hand, and the right/clean hand rule is perfect, and thus can be accepted and uphold. When the health benefits are not proven, it has no use.

As God tells us we must follow the best:

39:18 Who listen to the Word, and follow the best of its application (in a given situation) Such are those whom God guides, and they are the insightful ones.

Respected Arnold,

There are few things, which are to be judged by mankind also. We can not be too restrictive in every thing.
Circumscision, nail cutting, trimming head or body hairs are all hygenic practices.

Aslamo elikom all,

Thank you brother Arnold once agian and brother Sidiqui too.
Let me tell you why I made that decision. I talked to six different medical specialists only two of them Christians and four muslims. Two of them my very close relatives and alhumdulillah both extreemly competent and all of them said the same thing...There is nothing scientific about it and that It's more to do with religion and culture.
In fact the last doctor with whom I talked about this issue is my direct relative and I quote him"... if you ask me strictly as a doctor and not as a muslim then I would say the only science in this is convenience for cleaning but same can be said for females as they have folds too..."
There is no solid scientific proof of any advantage.
The hygiene factor is for everyone. I read about circumcision as being part of hygiene practice but actually I have come to the conclusion it's about NOT keeping the hygiene.
It's very different than cutting nails and hair ...THEY GROW!!! but to cut a body part PERMANANTLY, come on!
And lastly didn't Allah said he created human in perfect shape!
That shape must have some advantages we don't know of.. Isn't it possible we have been following what could have been just another "ignorant cultural practice" in the name of religion. I think most of us are still trying to purport that culture and religion we are used to unconciously, even if there is no evidence to support it.

Allah knows the best.

thankyou and

jazakAllah
