Obama and the Empire

The Obamania bubble should already have begun to lose some air with the multiple US bombings of Pakistan within the first few days following the inauguration. The Pentagon briefed the White House of its plans, and the White House had no objection. So bombs away — Barack Obama's first war crime. The dozens of victims were, of course, all bad people, including all the women and children. As with all these bombings, we'll never know the names of all the victims — It's doubtful that even Pakistan knows — or what crimes they had committed to deserve the death penalty. Some poor Pakistani probably earned a nice fee for telling the authorities that so-and-so bad guy lived in that house over there; too bad for all the others who happened to live with the bad guy, assuming of course that the bad guy himself actually lived in that house over there.

Why The US Should Leave Afghanistan

Beginning early in the presidential election campaign last year, both candidates asserted that they would increase the heat in Afghanistan. Between 2001 and early 2009, military operation in that country, which so far have accomplished nothing, occupied virtually the entire Bush presidency and burned roughly $200 billion of the US treasury. So far over 500 Americans have been killed, along with 150 allies and thousands of Afghani people. Wounded and traumatized military and civilian personnel number in the tens of thousands. In the Pakistan phase of this campaign, begun late in the Bush term and now started in the Obama term, the US has conducted at least 38 mainly drone raids, killing more than 150 people, few if any of whom are provably terrorists. With that the US is now courting the enmity of 50 million Pushtun people who by agreement with Islamabad rule that region of Pakistan.

Pakistan Parliament Will Authorize Shooting Down U.S. Drones?

Here is a 7-point Parliament resolution authorizing Pakistan Air Force to shoot down CIA drones coming from Afghanistan and killing innocent Pakistani citizens. U.S. might expand its war into Pakistan. This is a time for concrete action. It's now or never. If we have to then we must remove this government and install an interim technocrat based government until the situation in the country improves. We the people of Pakistan must demand these actions from this government and must not fall into the disguised rhetoric of our corrupt leaders.

What happens when the insurgents shoot down the US drones?

The US hubris allows it to bomb Pakistani territory at will, just like the U-2 used to fly over the USSR at will. In time the USSR found a way to shoot down the U-2s and caused a huge embarrassment for Washington. One of these days, the insurgents will be able to shoot down the drones. That day, there will be tremendous frustration in the corridors of power across the Potomic.

From A Pakistani Citizen To Pak Army Chief

I am publishing this letter from a young Pakistani citizen, and another one from older one, not as an endorsement of a military coup. I do not endorse such a coup. I endorse what I call a 'Smart Coup', an actionable roadmap that harnesses the capabilities of all Pakistanis, civilian and military, to reorganize the state and renew the trust of its citizens. The military needs to support a civilian regime made up of technocrats who execute a long term plan to reorganize the Pakistani state. These two letters are from ordinary citizens. They show despair and demoralization which is spreading among Pakistanis because of a serious failure of leadership in Islamabad. The military does not have magic solutions. But it is an option of last resort. Hence this.
